    King dismisses PJD's Benkirane after a five-month deadlock, names El Othmani

    Though the PJD again won the 7 October 2016 election (125 seats), party leader and incumbent PM Abdelilah Benkirane spent five months unable to assemble a coalition (the "blocage"). On 17 March 2017 King Mohammed VI removed Benkirane and tasked another PJD figure, Saad Eddine El Othmani, with forming a government — a royal intervention widely read as constraining the elected Islamist party.

    PJD government pushes through the contested 2016 pension reform

    In mid-2016 the PJD-led Benkirane government enacted a reform of the public-sector pension fund (CMR): the retirement age was raised from 60 to 63 (phased to 2022) and worker/employer contributions were increased from 10% toward 14%. The House of Councillors approved the package in late June 2016 and the House of Representatives in July 2016. Trade unions (UMT, CDT and others) struck and thousands protested in Rabat, arguing pensions would fall 20–40%.

    PJD forms Morocco's first Islamist-led government (Benkirane I)

    After winning a plurality (107 seats) in the 25 November 2011 election — the first under the post-Arab-Spring 2011 constitution — the Justice and Development Party (PJD) provided Morocco's first elected Islamist head of government. King Mohammed VI appointed party secretary-general Abdelilah Benkirane on 29 November 2011; the coalition government (with Istiqlal, the MP and the PPS) was formed in early January 2012. It was the first time an Islamist party led a Moroccan government.
