  • Confirmed Other September 3, 1981

Tagammu leaders swept up in Sadat's September 1981 crackdown

Tagammu's open criticism of Sadat — over the peace with Israel and economic liberalization — drew his fury, and its leaders were among the roughly 1,500 dissidents across the spectrum detained in the mass arrests of September 1981, weeks before Sadat's assassination. Under Mubarak the party settled into the role of tolerated "loyal opposition."

  • Confirmed Party formed April 1976

Tagammu founded as the legal "Left platform" of Sadat's opening

In April 1976, as Anwar Sadat loosened the one-party Arab Socialist Union into a limited multiparty system, former Free Officer Khaled Mohieddin and Kamal Rifaat broke away to found the National Progressive Unionist Party (Tagammu) as the system's designated leftist "platform." It gathered Nasserists, Marxists and Arab nationalists around a socialist, popular-participation program.
