Algerian Islamist party that won the 1991 legislative election's first round before the military cancelled the second round and dissolved the party in March 1992 — the proximate trigger for the Algerian Civil War (1992–2002). Remains banned under Algerian law.

    FIS banned, leaders jailed — Algeria slides into civil war

    An Algiers court dissolved the FIS on 4 March 1992; leaders Abbassi Madani and Ali Benhadj had already been arrested (and were later sentenced to 12 years), and thousands of members were detained in desert camps. The crushing of the electoral path drove armed Islamist groups to insurgency, igniting a civil war that killed an estimated 200,000 Algerians during the 1990s "Black Decade."

    Military cancels the election to deny the FIS power

    On 11 January 1992 the Algerian army forced President Chadli Bendjedid from office and cancelled the second round of the election to prevent a FIS victory, installing a High Council of State. The annulment of a vote the Islamists had clearly won is a defining democracy-axis episode — power denied to the winners of a free election.

    FIS sweeps the first round of Algeria's 1991 election

    On 26 December 1991 the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) won the first round of Algeria's first multiparty legislative election in a landslide — 188 seats to the ruling FLN's 16 — and stood poised to take an absolute majority in the 16 January 1992 run-off, which would have made it the first Islamist movement to win power at the ballot box in the Arab world.
