    Ben-Gvir's Temple Mount visit draws a UN Security Council session

    On 3 January 2023, days into his tenure, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered the Temple Mount / al-Aqsa compound — his first as minister — despite warnings it would inflame tensions. The visit drew condemnation from the US, EU, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE and prompted a UN Security Council session. With authority over the police that enforce the site's rules, Ben-Gvir signalled intent to erode the long-standing status quo barring Jewish prayer.
