    YSP leaders declare southern secession and lose the 1994 war

    Amid post-unification disputes, on 21 May 1994 YSP secretary-general Ali Salem al-Beidh and southern leaders declared a breakaway Democratic Republic of Yemen. Saleh's northern forces crushed the secession by July 1994; the YSP's assets were confiscated and its cadres persecuted, reducing the former ruling party of the South to a marginalized opposition.

    Intra-YSP factional war erupts in South Yemen (1986)

    On 13 January 1986 a power struggle inside the ruling YSP between the factions of Ali Nasir Muhammad and Abdul Fattah Ismail exploded into the South Yemen civil war. Thousands were killed in days of fighting in Aden; Abdul Fattah Ismail died, Ali Nasir fled north, and Ali Salem al-Beidh took over the shattered party — a self-inflicted catastrophe that hastened the South's drift toward unification.

    Yemeni Socialist Party founded as South Yemen's sole ruling party

    In October 1978 the National Front transformed itself into the Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP), the sole legal, Marxist-Leninist ruling party of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen). It won all 111 seats in the December 1978 Supreme People's Council election and governed the only avowedly communist state in the Arab world.
