    Workers' Party leads the founding of the Popular Front

    In October 2012 Hamma Hammami's Workers' Party spearheaded the creation of the Popular Front, a coalition of roughly a dozen leftist and Arab-nationalist parties that became the main secular-left opposition to the Ennahda-led government and won seats in the 2014 assembly — though it was battered by the 2013 assassinations of its allied figures Belaid and Brahmi.

    Workers' Communist Party of Tunisia (PCOT) founded underground

    Founded in 1986 as the Tunisian Workers' Communist Party (PCOT), the Marxist-Leninist party operated clandestinely through the Bourguiba and Ben Ali eras, its leader Hamma Hammami repeatedly imprisoned and tortured. Legalized only after the 2011 revolution, it dropped "communist" from its name in July 2012 to become the Workers' Party.
