    DFLP carries out the Ma'alot school massacre

    On 15 May 1974 DFLP gunmen seized a school in the Galilee town of Ma'alot, taking scores of teenagers hostage; the ensuing assault left about 25 Israeli students dead. One of the deadliest attacks of the era, it cemented the DFLP's record of armed operations against civilians.

    Hawatmeh splits from the PFLP to found the DFLP

    On 22 February 1969 Nayef Hawatmeh broke from the PFLP to found the (Popular) Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a Marxist-Leninist/Maoist faction that judged the PFLP insufficiently doctrinaire. It became a significant PLO member and the secular left's second pole after the PFLP.
