    FFS co-signs the 1995 Sant'Egidio (Rome) Platform

    On 13 January 1995, amid Algeria's civil war, the FFS under Hocine Aït Ahmed joined the FLN, the banned Islamist FIS and others in signing the Sant'Egidio (Rome) Platform — an opposition pact calling for an end to violence, the release of FIS leaders and a negotiated democratic transition. The regime rejected it, but it marked the FFS's signature bid to broker a political, rather than military, exit from the conflict.

    Aït Ahmed founds the FFS and launches the Kabylie revolt

    On 29 September 1963 independence hero Hocine Aït Ahmed proclaimed the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) in Tizi Ouzou to oppose Ahmed Ben Bella's one-party FLN state and demand pluralism and recognition for Kabylia. Within days Ben Bella sent the army into Kabylia; the ensuing 1963–64 revolt left more than 400 dead. The FFS endured as Algeria's oldest opposition party.
