Pan-Arab vs particularist

القومية العربية مقابل الخصوصية

Degree to which the actor frames its politics around pan-Arab solidarity (the Nasserist, Baathist, and contemporary anti-normalization tradition) versus country- or community-specific particularism (sectarian, ethnic, monarchic, or nation-state-first frames). One of the major regional cleavages.

Scoring rubric

How positions are calibrated on this axis. The conventions guide the scorer; anchored examples show how known MENA actors land at -10, -5, 0, +5, +10.

Score the actor on the pan-Arab vs particularist axis. Positive: actively frames politics around pan-Arab solidarity (Nasserist, Baathist, anti-normalization tradition). Negative: country- or community-specific particularism (sectarian, ethnic, monarchic, nation-state-first frames). A score of 0 marks pragmatic parties without strong pan-Arab framing. Kurdish parties are the dataset's pan-Arab floor; Baathist parties the historical ceiling.

Cross-axis correlations

How parties' scores on this axis covary with their scores on each other axis. Pearson r runs from −1 (perfect inverse) to +1 (perfect identity); 0 means independent. Computed across all parties scored on both axes (n shown per row). Strong correlations expose which axes are really measuring the same cleavage in the data; near-zero values are the ones with the most additional explanatory power.
