Tahya Tounes flops in 2019; Chahed fails to reach the presidential runoff

In the autumn 2019 elections Tahya Tounes won only about 14 of 217 seats and Youssef Chahed was eliminated in the first round of the September presidential vote — a collapse that mirrored the broader implosion of Tunisia's post-2014 secular establishment and cleared the way for the outsider Kais Saied.

Sitting PM Chahed splits from Nidaa Tounes to found Tahya Tounes

On 27 January 2019, amid the implosion of the ruling Nidaa Tounes over the role of President Essebsi's son, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and dozens of defecting deputies launched Tahya Tounes ("Long Live Tunisia") at a founding meeting in Monastir; Chahed was elected its president on 2 June 2019. It was an attempt to rebuild a secular-modernist governing pole around the premiership.
