Islah anchors the 2011 uprising and the GCC transition that ousted Saleh
Islah was the principal organized force behind the 2011 popular uprising against Ali Abdullah Saleh — its tribal and Brotherhood networks and the defection of General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar gave the protests their backbone. As the lead bloc in the opposition JMP, Islah backed the GCC-brokered transition initiative Saleh signed on 23 November 2011 and took ministries in the subsequent unity government under President Hadi.

Islah founded in newly unified Yemen
The Yemeni Congregation for Reform (al-Islah) was founded on 13 September 1990 in Sana'a — months after Yemeni unification — by tribal paramount sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmar together with Muslim Brotherhood figures and the Salafi scholar Abdul Majeed al-Zindani, with the tacit blessing of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. It fused a tribal confederacy, the Yemeni Muslim Brotherhood and a Salafi current into the country's main Sunni Islamist party.
