PFLP assassinates Israeli minister Rehavam Ze'evi
On 17 October 2001 PFLP gunmen assassinated Israeli tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi at a Jerusalem hotel — the first killing of an Israeli cabinet minister — in retaliation for Israel's assassination of PFLP secretary-general Abu Ali Mustafa that August. The attack hardened Israeli policy in the Second Intifada and led to the long imprisonment of PFLP leader Ahmad Sa'adat.

PFLP carries out the Dawson's Field hijackings
On 6 September 1970 PFLP militants hijacked multiple Western airliners, forcing three to a desert airstrip ("Revolutionary Airport") near Zarqa, Jordan, holding hundreds of hostages before blowing up the empty planes; an attempt on an El Al flight was foiled and hijacker Leila Khaled captured. The spectacular operation pioneered modern aircraft hijacking as political theatre and helped trigger the "Black September" war between the PLO and Jordan.

George Habash founds the PFLP
On 11 December 1967, in the aftermath of the Arab defeat in the June 1967 war, George Habash founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a Marxist-Leninist movement committed to armed struggle and pan-Arab revolution. It became the second-largest PLO faction after Fatah and the leading secular-left rival to its nationalist mainstream.
