    MSP joins the pro-Bouteflika Presidential Alliance

    From 1999 the MSP backed President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and in 2004 formally joined the "Presidential Alliance" with the FLN and RND, taking cabinet seats. The Islamist party's long participation in government — rather than opposition — defined Algerian "participationist" Islamism until the MSP left the coalition around 2012.

    Nahnah finishes second in Algeria's 1995 presidential election

    With the FIS banned and the civil war raging, MSP leader Mahfoud Nahnah ran in the 16 November 1995 presidential election and came second with about 25% behind General Liamine Zéroual — legitimizing the vote and establishing the MSP as the face of "participationist" Islamism that the regime tolerated.

    Nahnah founds Hamas/MSP, choosing participation over the FIS

    On 6 December 1990 Mahfoud Nahnah founded the Islamist party Hamas — later the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) — pointedly declining to join the more confrontational Islamic Salvation Front. Built on a Muslim Brotherhood lineage and a doctrine of moderation, participation and gradualism, it chose to work inside the system.
