Iran posture
الموقف من إيرانPosition toward the Islamic Republic of Iran as a regional actor: alliance, hostility, or neutrality. Independent from West alignment — a party can be anti-Western AND anti-Iran (most Sunni Salafi groups), or pro-Western AND anti-Iran (Saudi, UAE, post-1979 Israel), or anti-Western AND pro-Iran (Hezbollah, Houthis, post-2003 Iraqi Shia parties).
Scoring rubric
How positions are calibrated on this axis. The conventions guide the scorer; anchored examples show how known MENA actors land at -10, -5, 0, +5, +10.
Score the explicit Iran position: military alignment with Iran or its proxies, diplomatic stance toward Tehran, position on the Iran nuclear file, framing in public rhetoric. Distinct from broader anti-imperialist or pan-Arab framings unless they explicitly include Iran.
- -10Iran framed as existential threat; military preparation explicit.
- -5Iran-adversarial; tactical diplomacy.
- +0Tactical, transactional; varies by issue.
- +5Strategic coordination with Iran on regional issues.
- +10Direct alliance; military integration via IRGC structures.

Cross-axis correlations
How parties' scores on this axis covary with their scores on each other axis. Pearson r runs from −1 (perfect inverse) to +1 (perfect identity); 0 means independent. Computed across all parties scored on both axes (n shown per row). Strong correlations expose which axes are really measuring the same cleavage in the data; near-zero values are the ones with the most additional explanatory power.
