License & terms

Tayyar is an independent research instrument, built and maintained by Tarek Gara. It maps the documented positions of political actors across the Middle East and North Africa. Listing or scoring an actor is a measurement, not an endorsement — see independence below. It is offered for non-commercial research and journalism.

1 · License

Dataset. The entity rows, scores, ratings, confidence and agreement figures, axis rubrics and exemplars, events, bills, quotes, and comparison briefs are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). You may share and adapt it for non-commercial purposes if you attribute it to "Tayyar — tarekgara.com/tayyar," note any changes, cite the frozen snapshot (tayyar-dataset-v0.2) you used, and license derivatives alike. Commercial use requires prior written permission.

Source texts. Document excerpts, speeches, and social-media captures that Tayyar quotes are reproduced under fair use and the right of quotation, with attribution; all rights remain with their rights-holders. A removal request via contact is honoured promptly.

Code. The application code (Astro components, TypeScript, SQL migrations) will be open-sourced under the MIT License when the project goes public. The repository is currently private; a public repository and a permanent DOI for the dataset are in preparation. Until then, cite the frozen snapshot above for a stable reference.

2 · Independence & non-endorsement

Tayyar is not affiliated with, funded by, or speaking for any party, politician, government, movement, or state, and receives no support from any actor it covers.

Inclusion is not endorsement. An actor appears here because they are part of the political landscape being mapped — not because the project supports, opposes, legitimises, or condemns them. The same neutral treatment applies across the spectrum, in every country. Tayyar scores documented positions and conduct; it does not rank the worth, legitimacy, or morality of any person or group, and a score is never praise or blame.

3 · Terms of use

  • Tayyar is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Scores are reproducible estimates, not authoritative or official judgments, and the dataset will be wrong in places.
  • Use it for research, journalism, and education. Do not present its numbers as established fact, legal findings, or the official position of any actor.
  • For load-bearing claims, consult the per-field source citations and the methodology, and verify against primary sources.
  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, the author accepts no liability for decisions made on the basis of this dataset.

4 · Disclaimers

Maps & borders. Any map is a schematic, de-facto display for orientation only. Boundaries, control, and place names shown or implied are not a legal claim, an assertion of sovereignty, or a statement on the status or recognition of any territory.

Naming. Entities, places, and offices are labelled by their most common English usage for findability; alternative names are indexed where known. A chosen name is a convenience, not a political statement, and no slight is intended by any spelling or form.

Contested & historical actors. Parties, figures, and movements that are contested, dissolved, outlawed, or historical are mapped in the same neutral frame as everyone else so positions can be compared. Their inclusion is for analysis — it is not recognition, rehabilitation, or a verdict on their legitimacy.

Scores & lenses. A position is a panel median over a calibrated rubric, carrying a confidence and an agreement figure; the declared / behavioural lenses report what an actor says versus how it acts. These are interpretive measurements, not an actor's official self-description.

5 · Questions & corrections

Spotted an error — a wrong year, a misattributed leader, a stale fact, or anything that reads as unfair — get in touch with a source link. Corrections are tracked and land as dataset updates with the same provenance as every other change.
