Oman January 11, 2021 Sultan Haitham reforms the Basic Law and creates a Crown Prince
On 11 January 2021 Sultan Haitham issued a royal decree formalizing succession for the first time — making the sultan's eldest son crown prince (his son Theyazin becoming Oman's first) — and amended the Basic Statute to reaffirm freedom of expression, scrap a provision allowing surveillance of private communications, and protect freedom of religious practice. A cautious top-down liberalization of the succession and rights framework.

Haitham bin Tariq becomes Sultan of Oman
After the death of the long-ruling Sultan Qaboos on 10 January 2020, Haitham bin Tariq — a cousin and veteran cabinet minister — was named sultan the next day in accordance with Qaboos's sealed will, sworn before the Council of Oman. He inherited an absolute monarchy facing fiscal strain and the challenge of succeeding a near-mythologized ruler.
