    Former Kadima PM Ehud Olmert imprisoned for corruption

    Ehud Olmert, who led Kadima and served as prime minister 2006–2009, became the first Israeli head of government to be imprisoned when he entered Maasiyahu Prison on 15 February 2016 to serve a sentence for bribery (the Holyland affair) and obstruction of justice. He had resigned the premiership in 2008–09 as the corruption investigations mounted.

    Kadima wins the 2006 election; Olmert forms a government

    After Sharon was incapacitated by a stroke in January 2006, Ehud Olmert led Kadima to victory in the 28 March 2006 election with 29 of 120 seats — the largest party — and formed a coalition. His government oversaw the 2006 Lebanon war, the 2008–09 Gaza war and the Annapolis peace talks.

    Sharon founds Kadima after the Gaza disengagement

    On 24 November 2005 Prime Minister Ariel Sharon quit Likud to found Kadima, a new centrist party, after the bruising fight over his August 2005 unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip. Kadima drew moderates from Likud and Labor around a platform of unilateral separation and pragmatic statecraft.
