Sadat dismantles the ASU into three "platforms"
Seeking to undo Nasser's single-party state, Anwar Sadat split the ASU into left, centre and right "platforms" in 1974–76 and then elevated them to parties — the National Democratic Party (his own), the leftist Tagammu and the Liberal (Ahrar) party — ending the ASU's monopoly; the organization was abolished by the end of the 1970s.

Nasser's catastrophic defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War
In the war of 5–10 June 1967, Israel destroyed the Egyptian air force on the ground and captured Sinai and Gaza from Egypt, the West Bank from Jordan and the Golan from Syria. The crushing defeat — the "Naksa" — shattered the credibility of Nasser's pan-Arab project; he briefly resigned before mass demonstrations recalled him, but Nasserism never recovered.

Nasser establishes the Arab Socialist Union as Egypt's sole party
Via the National Charter of May 1962, Gamal Abdel Nasser created the Arab Socialist Union (ASU) as Egypt's single legal party and vehicle of "Arab socialism," replacing the National Union. It mobilized workers, peasants, intellectuals and the military (with half of leadership seats reserved for workers and farmers) and spawned a secret "Vanguard Organization" in 1963.

Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal
On 26 July 1956 President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal Company, defying Britain and France. Their joint invasion with Israel (the Suez Crisis) was reversed under US and Soviet pressure, turning a military setback into a vast political victory that made Nasser the towering champion of Arab nationalism and anti-colonialism across the region.
