Summary
The first piece of the Netanyahu VI judicial overhaul to pass. Removed the Supreme Court's power to strike down government and ministerial decisions on the grounds of 'unreasonableness' — a doctrine the court had used to overturn appointments and policies it judged outside the bounds of public administration. The Knesset passed it 64-0 after the opposition walked out. Eight months of protests and the army reservists' protest letter preceded the vote.
Impact
The court struck the amendment down 8-7 in January 2024 — the first time it has ever invalidated a Basic Law amendment. The ruling itself became a new center of constitutional dispute, with the governing coalition rejecting its legitimacy.
