Abbas appoints economist Mohammad Mustafa as PA prime minister

On 14 March 2024 President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Mohammad Mustafa — a US-educated economist and long-time World Bank official and Abbas adviser — to head what was billed as the Palestinian Authority's first technocratic government, tasked with reform, fighting corruption and preparing to reunify West Bank and Gaza administration amid US pressure over post-war governance. Critics called him too close to Abbas to deliver genuine reform.
