Hanoune becomes the Arab world's first female presidential candidate

In the 8 April 2004 election Workers' Party leader Louisa Hanoune became the first woman to run for president of Algeria — and the first female presidential candidate in the Arab world — winning about 1% of the vote. She ran again in 2009 and 2014, making the PT a fixture of Algeria's tolerated opposition.
