Haniyeh becomes PM after Hamas's 2006 election win

After Hamas won the January 2006 Palestinian Legislative Council election, Ismail Haniyeh was sworn in as Palestinian Authority prime minister on 29 March 2006. The Western boycott of the Hamas government and the Fatah–Hamas power struggle culminated in Hamas's violent takeover of Gaza in June 2007, splitting Palestinian governance in two — the West Bank under Abbas/Fatah, Gaza under Hamas.
