Tebboune elected amid a Hirak boycott and record-low turnout

Abdelmadjid Tebboune — a former prime minister and the military establishment's favored candidate — was elected president of Algeria on 12 December 2019 with the lowest turnout ever for a presidential vote (officially under 40%, far lower by independent counts), as the Hirak protest movement demanding the dismantling of the old regime urged a boycott. His election entrenched continuity of "le pouvoir" behind a civilian facade, and his government later moved to suppress the Hirak.
