Al-Alimi becomes chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council

On 7 April 2022 President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, under heavy Saudi pressure, irreversibly transferred his powers to a new eight-member Presidential Leadership Council chaired by Rashad al-Alimi — a veteran former interior minister and academic. Sworn in at Aden on 19 April, al-Alimi was tasked with unifying the fractious anti-Houthi camp and reviving political and economic governance in the internationally recognized government.
