Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh shot dead in Jenin

On 11 May 2022 the veteran Palestinian-American Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head and killed while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin, wearing a clearly marked press vest. Multiple independent investigations and, eventually, the US and Israel concluded she was most likely killed by Israeli fire; Israeli police also assaulted mourners at her Jerusalem funeral. Her killing became a landmark press-freedom and accountability case.
