Hassan II survives a coup and entrenches the "Years of Lead"

King Hassan II narrowly survived a bloody military coup attempt at his Skhirat palace on 10 July 1971 (and an air-force attempt in 1972). He responded by deepening the repression of the "Years of Lead" (sanawat al-rasas) — forced disappearances, secret prisons such as Tazmamart, and the crushing of leftist and Islamist dissent — that defined his authoritarian rule until the 1990s.
