Parliament elects Abdul Latif Rashid president of Iraq

On 13 October 2022 Iraq's parliament elected the veteran Kurdish engineer Abdul Latif Rashid president with more than 162 votes, defeating incumbent Barham Salih — breaking the year-long post-election deadlock. Rashid (backed by the KDP) immediately named Mohammed Shia al-Sudani prime minister-designate, clearing the way for a new government even as rockets fell on Baghdad.
