Al-Menbar emerges as a leading Sunni Islamist bloc in 2002

In Bahrain's 2002 election the Al-Menbar Islamic Society — the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood-linked Al-Eslah society — won a leading share of Sunni seats in the new Council of Representatives. Pro-government and socially conservative, Al-Menbar consistently backed the ruling Al Khalifa family's legislation while pushing an Islamist social agenda.
