Mohammed VI drives the landmark 2004 Family Code reform

Early in his reign King Mohammed VI championed a sweeping reform of the Moudawana (Family Code), adopted in early 2004, which raised the marriage age to 18, granted women near-equal rights in marriage and divorce, restricted polygamy and recognized joint family responsibility — among the most progressive personal-status reforms in the Arab world and a defining act of his "modernizing monarch" image.
