New Wafd allies with the Muslim Brotherhood to win the 1984 election

In the 27 May 1984 parliamentary election the secular-liberal New Wafd formed a tactical alliance with the (legally banned) Muslim Brotherhood, together winning about 58 seats — the only opposition list to clear the 8% threshold. The liberal-Islamist marriage of convenience under an authoritarian electoral system is a notable behavioral departure from the party's declared secular-liberal identity.
