Court dissolves Ben Ali's RCD after the Jasmine Revolution
On 9 March 2011 a Tunis court ordered the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) dissolved and its assets liquidated, fulfilling a key demand of pro-democracy activists after Ben Ali fled the country on 14 January 2011. The RCD had been the regime's mass-mobilization and patronage machine for 23 years.

Ben Ali's RCD wins 84% in the sham 2009 election
In the 25 October 2009 election — the last under Ben Ali — his Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) took 84.6% of the vote and 161 of 214 Chamber of Deputies seats, while Ben Ali was re-elected president with 89.6%. Like every Tunisian election since independence the contest was widely judged fraudulent, and HRW reported an intensified crackdown on critics in its wake.

Ben Ali seizes power in the 1987 "medical coup"
On 7 November 1987 Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali deposed Tunisia's ageing founding president Habib Bourguiba in a bloodless palace coup, having him declared medically unfit to govern, and assumed the presidency. What began with promises of pluralism hardened into 23 years of police-state rule built on the RCD.
