    Neo-Destour leads Tunisia to independence; Bourguiba takes power

    Neo-Destour's negotiations under Habib Bourguiba secured Tunisian independence from France on 20 March 1956, after which Bourguiba became prime minister. The party abolished the monarchy and declared a republic on 25 July 1957 with Bourguiba as president, inaugurating decades of single-party Destourian rule.

    Bourguiba founds the Neo-Destour party

    On 2 March 1934, at the Ksar Hellal congress, Habib Bourguiba and allies broke from the older Destour party to found the Neo-Destour — a mass-membership, modernist nationalist movement that would lead Tunisia's independence struggle against France and become the country's ruling party (renamed the Socialist Destourian Party / PSD in 1964).
