From Loujain al-Hathloul (b. 1989, Saudi women's-rights activist, the primary public face of the campaign to lift the ban on women driving; first detained December 2014 for driving from the UAE into Saudi Arabia; arrested in the mass crackdown of 15 May 2018 — weeks before the formal lifting of the driving ban on 24 June 2018; held 1001 days and reportedly tortured; released 10 February 2021 with a travel ban):
**24 March 2016** (clarification statement, responding to government attempts to portray her activism as anti-Saudi):
**"Criticising some phenomena in our home country does not equate to hating it."**
"I remain very optimistic about a bright future for my country and its citizens."
*The canonical Saudi-reformist-dissident position — distinct from Khashoggi's more frontal critique of MBS personally. Hathloul positioned her activism as patriotic reform rather than regime opposition.*
**13 November 2012** (Vocativ interview):
**"I am with the uprising of women in the Arab world because I can think and fully practice my religion."**
**5 March 2017** (cited by Amnesty International, roughly a year before her May 2018 arrest):
**"I will win. Not immediately, but definitely."**
*Her most-cited public framing of activist patience; the Amnesty citation predates her imprisonment by 14 months.*
*Historical context: Hathloul received the 2020 Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize while still imprisoned. Her case is the defining illustration of MBS's reform-and-repression contradiction — the regime granted the women-driving demand (June 2018) while imprisoning the very activists who had advocated for it (May 2018), the contradiction Khashoggi's columns specifically critiqued.* How to cite this document
