Statement by MK Moshe Gafni, chairman of Degel HaTorah (one of the two factions of United Torah Judaism), on 26 April 2026, reacting to a High Court of Justice decision (per Justice Noam Sohlberg) holding that the state was failing to enforce the prior conscription ruling against Haredi draft-evaders and ordering that economic benefits (daycare/after-school subsidies, public-transport discounts, government housing-program benefits, municipal-tax discounts) be reconditioned on regularizing one's status with the military authorities. Translation: "The State of Israel is progressively losing its identity as a Jewish and democratic state. The High Court of Justice [Bagatz] acts consistently and systematically to harm Torah scholars and to diminish their place in the state."
