On 10 March 2023, after four days of talks in Beijing hosted and mediated by China, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced an agreement to restore diplomatic relations that had been severed for more than seven years. The two governments agreed to reopen their embassies and missions within a period not exceeding two months and to reactivate earlier security (2001) and economic (1998) cooperation accords. The deal was signed by Saudi national security adviser Musaad bin Mohammed al-Aiban, Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani, and China's top diplomat Wang Yi, and was framed as a response to an initiative by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Ties had been cut in January 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed the Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr and protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran. How to cite this document
