On 8 December 2024, opposition forces led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Damascus, ending more than five decades of Assad-family rule in Syria. President Bashar al-Assad fled the country, and the Russian foreign ministry confirmed he had left after resigning; he was granted asylum in Russia. The offensive had begun on 27 November 2024, taking Aleppo, Hama and Homs in rapid succession before reaching the capital. HTS leader Ahmad al-Sharaa (formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani) emerged as Syria's de facto leader. How to cite this document
