Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas's political bureau, was assassinated in Tehran in the early hours of 31 July 2024 while staying at an IRGC-run guesthouse. He had travelled to Iran to attend the inauguration of newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian the previous day. A bodyguard was also killed. Haniyeh had headed Hamas's political bureau since 2017 and previously served as Palestinian Authority prime minister. How to cite this document
