On 15 April 2023, heavy fighting erupted in Khartoum and at military sites nationwide, including the city's airport and the Merowe air base, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) commanded by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by his deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The clash followed a breakdown over the planned integration of the RSF into the regular army, a step tied to the stalled transition to civilian rule after the October 2021 coup the two men had jointly staged. The war derailed that transition and grew into a nationwide conflict; later estimates put the dead in the tens of thousands and the displaced at roughly 12 million, including some 3.5 million who fled the country as refugees.
