Jamal Khashoggi — a Washington Post columnist and prominent Saudi critic — was killed and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October 2018 by a team of Saudi agents. Saudi Arabia initially denied any knowledge of his fate, then acknowledged he had died inside the consulate, describing it as the result of a rogue operation. In February 2021 the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) publicly assessed that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman 'approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey to capture or kill' Khashoggi, citing his absolute control over the Kingdom's security and intelligence apparatus. A 2019 UN special-rapporteur inquiry by Agnès Callamard had separately found the killing to be a 'deliberate, premeditated execution' for which the Saudi state is responsible. MBS has DENIED ordering the killing — telling PBS 'Absolutely not' — while stating he takes responsibility as the country's de facto leader because it happened 'under my watch'.
