Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza and chairman of its political bureau, was killed on 16 October 2024 during an encounter with Israeli soldiers in the Tel al-Sultan area of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military announced his likely death on 17 October and confirmed it via dental records, fingerprints, and DNA. Hamas confirmed his death on 18 October. Sinwar had led Hamas in Gaza since 2017 and was regarded as a principal architect of the 7 October 2023 attack. How to cite this document
