A US-brokered cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah took effect at 04:00 local time on 27 November 2024, ending more than a year of cross-border fighting that had escalated into open war. The agreement set a 60-day initial period during which Israeli forces were to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah was to pull its forces north of the Litani River. The Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers were to be the only armed forces deployed south of the Litani, overseen by a US-led monitoring panel.
