On ~5 July 2013 — two days after the military removed President Mohamed Morsi — Badie addressed the pro-Morsi sit-in at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in Cairo, declaring the slogan that came to define the Brotherhood's stated strategy in the crisis: peaceful, "legitimacy"-based resistance to the coup.
