Summary
Presidential decree issued by Kais Saied criminalizing the production, dissemination, or spread of "false information" or "false news" intended to harm "public security" or "national defense." Five-year prison sentences plus 50,000 dinar fines; ten years if directed at a "public official."
Impact
Used to prosecute journalists, opposition politicians, lawyers, and union leaders for social media posts critical of Saied's government. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the Tunisian Journalists Syndicate (SNJT), and the National Bar Association have all condemned it as the principal legal instrument of post-25-July-2021 political repression in Tunisia. As of 2024 at least 60 prosecutions reported.
