Basic Statute of the State (2021 revision)

النظام الأساسي للدولة

Summary

Sultan Haitham's revised Basic Statute — the closest thing Oman has to a constitution — for the first time codified a clear line of succession through the male descendants of Sultan Qaboos's father, and established the role of Crown Prince. Previously, succession had passed through closed family council deliberation. The revision also created a five-year cap on minister tenures and renamed several state institutions.

Impact

Closed a long-standing question about Omani succession that had been a recurring concern of regional analysts during Qaboos's final illness. Made the state's personnel more rotation-bound than under Qaboos's decades-long appointments.
