National Pact (1943)
الميثاق الوطني اللبناني
Summary
Unwritten political agreement between Lebanon's Maronite Christians and Sunni Muslims that distributed top state offices by religious community: President to a Maronite, Prime Minister to a Sunni, Speaker of Parliament to a Shia. Foundational to Lebanon's confessional power-sharing system.
Impact
Remains the structural template of Lebanese politics 83 years on. Codified the constitutional sectarianism that has produced both Lebanon's long stability and its periodic civil conflicts. Modified by Taif Accords (1989) but not replaced.
