Cuando pienso que te fuiste,
negra sombra que me asombras,
al pie de mis cabezales
tornas haciéndome mofa.
Cuando imagino que te has ido,
en el mismo sol te muestras,
y eres la estrella que brilla,
y eres el viento que sopla.

Rosalía de Castro
Cuando pienso que te fuiste,
negra sombra que me asombras,
al pie de mis cabezales
tornas haciéndome mofa.
Cuando imagino que te has ido,
en el mismo sol te muestras,
y eres la estrella que brilla,
y eres el viento que sopla.
Context
Originally written in Galician in Follas Novas (1880); this is the central stanza in its Spanish-translation tradition. The 'sombra' the speaker addresses is something between depression, grief, and a beloved ghost — Rosalía never quite specifies, which is part of why the poem survives.
In plain English prose
When I think you have gone, you appear again as a shadow at my side. When I think you have all gone, you appear again. You are the dawn that breaks; you are the bell that calls.
Read it out loud at least once.
