Romance de la luna, luna (primeros versos)

Federico García Lorca

La luna vino a la fragua

con su polisón de nardos.

El niño la mira, mira.

El niño la está mirando.

Context

From Romancero Gitano (1928), Lorca's most popular collection. The 'romance' is a Spanish ballad form: octosyllabic lines, assonant rhyme on even lines. The whole poem tells the boy's death; this excerpt is just the opening four-line stanza, where the supernatural moon arrives.

In plain English prose

The moon came to the forge with her bustle of spikenards. The child watches her, watches her. The child is watching her.

Read it out loud at least once.
