Anoche cuando dormía
soñé, ¡bendita ilusión!,
que una fontana fluía
dentro de mi corazón.
Di, ¿por qué acequia escondida,
agua, vienes hasta mí,
manantial de nueva vida
en donde nunca bebí?

Context
From Soledades, galerías y otros poemas (1907). The poem has four stanzas; this first one establishes the dream-frame the others vary. Each stanza follows the same scaffolding — 'anoche cuando dormía / soñé, bendita ilusión / que…' — and unfolds a different metaphor for grace.
In plain English prose
Last night while I slept I dreamed, blessed illusion, that a fountain flowed inside my heart. Tell me: through what hidden channel, water, did you come to me, spring of new life that I had never drunk?
Read it out loud at least once.
